Do I Need a Second Photographer for My Wedding?

The honest answer? Not every couple does.

A second photographer can be a brilliant addition to your wedding photography, but I don’t think every couple needs one.

It really comes down to your wedding, your plans and what you want photographed.

If you’re getting ready in separate locations, having a larger wedding or simply want more of those little moments happening throughout the day, having a second photographer can make a huge difference.

And because I can’t be in two places at once, sometimes an extra pair of eyes is exactly what you need!

So, if you’re wondering whether a second photographer is actually worth it, here’s everything you need to know.

What is a second photographer?

A second photographer works alongside me on your wedding day.

They aren’t there to take over your wedding photography or wander around taking random extra photos.

Their job is to work as part of the team, giving you another perspective and allowing us to photograph things that are happening at the same time.

This is particularly useful during the morning preparations.
While I’m with you, my second photographer can be with your partner.

So while I’m photographing the excitement, nerves, champagne and chaos with you, they can be over with your partner doing exactly the same.

So while I’m photographing the excitement, nerves, champagne and chaos with you, they can be over with your partner doing exactly the same.

And yes, that usually means I get to see what the boys have been up to as well!

Why would I need a second wedding photographer?

The biggest reason is simple. I can’t be everywhere at once.

There are usually loads of things happening on a wedding morning, often in completely different locations.

While I’m with you getting ready, your partner might be across town getting ready with their friends and family.

They could be having the craic with the boys, opening a bottle of something, getting their buttonholes on or having those last few moments before heading off to the ceremony.

Meanwhile, I’m with you capturing the excitement, the nerves, the laughs and all the madness happening on your side.

With a second photographer, we can photograph both sides of your morning.

And I think that’s one of the biggest benefits. You’re not just getting photographs of your preparations. You’re getting to see what your partner was up to while you were getting ready too.

1. You and your partner are getting ready separately

This is probably the biggest reason I recommend a second photographer.

If you’re getting ready in different locations, I can’t physically photograph both of you.

With a second photographer, I can spend the morning with you while they photograph your partner getting ready.

That means you don’t have to choose between having photographs of your morning preparations and photographs of theirs.

You get both.

And I love that because your wedding story starts long before you walk down the aisle.

2. You want more of your guests photographed

Your wedding is also about all the people you’ve chosen to have there with you.

The hugs.
The laughs.
The emotional moments.
The people catching up over a drink.
Your friends absolutely losing it on the dance floor.
Your granny having a great time.
Your dad trying to pretend he’s not emotional.
All those little moments are happening throughout the day.

Having two photographers means there are two of us looking out for them.

3. You get different perspectives of the same moment

This is one of my favourite things about having a second photographer.

Imagine you’re walking down the aisle.

I’m concentrating on you.

Your second photographer can be watching your partner’s face.

It’s not about taking the same photograph twice.
It’s about seeing the same moment from different points of view.

4. More of the little moments can be photographed

Honestly, these are often my favourite photographs. The ones that weren’t planned.

The quick glance between you and your partner.
Your dad fixing your dress.
Your bridesmaid making you laugh.
A little hand squeeze.

You might not even realise these things are happening. And that’s exactly why I love having another photographer there.
While I’m photographing one moment, they might spot another.

5. It can make the day feel less like a photoshoot

This might sound strange, but having a second photographer can actually help keep your wedding day relaxed.

Because there are two of us, we can cover more without constantly needing you to be involved.

Because there are two of us, we can cover more without constantly needing you to be involved. Your second photographer can be there.

We can split up when we need to, cover different parts of the venue and photograph more without everything revolving around the cameras.

Which means you can get on with doing what you’re actually there to do. Enjoy your wedding.

Eat the food.
Have the drink.
Hug your people.
Laugh until your face hurts.
Dance like nobody is watching

That’s much more my idea of a wedding day anyway!

Do I need a second photographer for a small wedding?

Probably not.

If you’re having a small, intimate wedding and you’re both getting ready in the same location, one photographer may be absolutely perfect.

I don’t believe in adding things to your package just because you’re told you should have them. If I think you don’t need a second photographer, I’ll tell you. Your wedding photography should be about what actually works for you, not ticking boxes on a list.

Do I need a second photographer for a large wedding?

This is where I’d definitely consider it.

If you’re having a larger wedding with lots of guests, a big bridal party, separate getting ready locations or a busy timeline, a second photographer can be really useful.

It gives us more flexibility and means we’re able to photograph more of what’s happening without everything revolving around the cameras.

Is a second photographer worth it?

For the right wedding, absolutely.

But I don’t think the value is simply in getting more photographs. It’s about getting more of your story.

More people.
More reactions.
More of the things you didn’t see.
More of those little moments that happen when you’re busy enjoying yourself.

And I think there’s something really lovely about looking through your gallery afterwards and discovering something that happened without you even knowing about it.

That photograph of your partner laughing with their friends while you were getting ready. The photograph of your bridesmaids having a laugh while you were in another room. Your partner’s face as you walked down the aisle.
Your friends reacting during the speeches. Those are the things a second photographer can help us capture.

What does my second photographer actually photograph?

The biggest part of their job is often being with your partner while I’m with you.

If you’re getting ready at different locations, they’ll head off to photograph your partner’s preparations while I stay with you.

They’ll capture the people they’re with, the atmosphere, the little details and all those moments happening before they leave for the ceremony.

Once the ceremony starts, we’ll then work together to cover different perspectives and moments throughout the rest of the day.

So you’re not getting two photographers simply taking the same photographs.

We’re covering more of your wedding because we’re in two places when we need to be. And honestly, I love that.

Because when you look through your gallery afterwards, you get to see a part of your wedding day that you weren’t there to experience yourself. That’s pretty special.

Will I get twice as many wedding photos?

Not necessarily. And I think it’s important to say that.

Having two photographers doesn’t mean you’ll receive two identical galleries or suddenly get thousands of photographs.

The benefit is the coverage and variety, not simply the number of files.

You might receive photographs from different parts of the venue, different perspectives and moments that one photographer simply couldn’t have been in the right place to photograph. It’s about having more of the story, rather than more for the sake of more.

When would I recommend a second photographer?

I’d definitely suggest considering one if:

You and your partner are getting ready in separate locations
• You have a larger wedding
• You have lots of guests
• You have a large wedding party
• You want both sides of the morning preparations photographed
• You love lots of candid photographs of your guests
• You want different perspectives during your ceremony and speeches
• You have a busy wedding day with lots happening at once
• You simply want us to be able to cover more of your day

But if you’re having a smaller wedding and everything is happening in one location? You might be absolutely fine with just me.

So, should you add a second photographer?

If you’re still not sure, just ask me. Tell me about your wedding.

Where you’re getting ready, how many guests you’re having, what your plans are and what is important to you.

I’ll tell you honestly whether I think a second photographer would be worthwhile. Because I don’t want you spending money on something you don’t actually need.

And if I think having a second photographer would make a big difference to your day, I’ll tell you that too..

Want more of your wedding day photographed?

A second photographer can be added to your wedding photography package if you decide it’s right for you.

And if you’re not sure? Just ask

There are no silly questions when it comes to planning your wedding. I’d much rather you know exactly what you’re booking and why you’re booking it. After all, your wedding photography should feel like your day, not a photoshoot.

And that’s exactly how I want it to feel from the moment we start planning together.

I’m Melissa, a Northern Ireland wedding photographer based in County Armagh, photographing relaxed, fun weddings throughout Northern Ireland and across Ireland.

If you like the way I work and think we might be a good fit, I’d love to hear all about your plans.
