I always say your pre wedding photoshoot is one of the nicest parts of the whole wedding journey. It is relaxed, it is fun, and it gives us time together before the big day so you can feel completely at ease in front of my camera.
And one of the most common questions I get is what should we wear.
The good news is, it is much simpler than most couples think. You do not need anything complicated or overly styled. You just need outfits that feel like you and help you feel confident together.
Here is exactly how I guide my couples when it comes to choosing what to wear.
Keep it coordinated, not matching
I always encourage couples to coordinate rather than match exactly.
Think of it like creating a soft colour story between you both rather than wearing identical outfits. When you do this, everything feels more natural and visually beautiful in your photos.
For example, one of you might wear a soft neutral tone while the other goes for something slightly deeper or earthy, but still in the same overall palette.
It keeps everything feeling effortless and balanced without looking too staged
Choose colours that feel timeless
Neutral and soft tones always photograph beautifully and never date.
Some of my favourites are soft creams, beige, warm browns, gentle greens, muted blues, and soft pastels.
These tones sit so nicely in natural light and allow your connection to be the focus of the images rather than your clothing.
I would usually suggest avoiding anything too bright or bold as it can take attention away from the emotion in your photos.
Dress for the location and season
Where we shoot plays a big part in what you should wear.
If we are in the countryside, soft flowing fabrics and natural tones work perfectly. If we are in a more urban setting, you can lean slightly more structured or styled outfits. For beach sessions, light fabrics and movement always look amazing.
Season also matters. Layering works really well in cooler months, while lighter fabrics are perfect for warmer evenings.
The aim is always comfort so you can move, walk, laugh, and just enjoy the moment without thinking about your outfit..
Comfort is everything
This is something I always remind couples.
If you are uncomfortable, you will feel it in your photos.
Choose outfits that fit well, allow you to move freely, and feel like something you would genuinely wear. Nothing too tight, nothing you are constantly adjusting, and nothing that does not feel like you.
When you feel comfortable, everything else just flows naturally.
Add texture and simple layers
Texture always adds a lovely depth to photos.
Think knits, linen, lace, denim, soft cotton, or light layering pieces like jackets or cardigans.
Layers also give us a bit of variety during the shoot without needing a full outfit change, which keeps everything relaxed and easy.
Keep patterns and logos minimal
Simple is always best when it comes to photography.
Small subtle patterns can work, but I would usually avoid anything too busy or anything with large logos or branding.
These can date your images quickly and distract from the real focus, which is the two of you together.
Think about shoes and finishing touches
Shoes are often overlooked but they do matter.
Try to choose something that suits your outfit and location and is comfortable enough for walking. For outdoor sessions especially, comfort is key.
Little finishing touches like hair, makeup, and grooming also help everything feel polished while still natural. Nothing overly styled, just the best version of you.

Your pre wedding photos are not about perfect outfits. They are about how you feel together.
